When the Sleeper Wakes, also known as The Sleeper Awakes and other variations on that title, is a book by H.G. Wells which is effectively a prequel to The Time Machine (Novel).
It takes place mainly in the year 2100, starring a protagonist named Graham who has been sleeping since the 19th Century and wakes up to find himself in charge of the world.
During the course of the book, Graham meets an under-class of workers who live their whole lives underground. By this time, they have already showed signs of evolving into the Morlocks.
